CPA candidate application guide
How to apply for the CPA Exam: step by step
Choose the authority that controls your application, build the right document packet, and move from eligibility review to a scheduled exam appointment without treating a general checklist as Board approval.
Published by Kesler CPA Review, a commercial CPA exam preparation company. This educational guide is not legal advice or an eligibility evaluation. The Board or designated application authority makes the final decision.
The short answer
Apply through the authority for your candidate jurisdiction
Start by choosing the jurisdiction whose education and personal eligibility rules you can satisfy. Then follow that Board's or designee's application instructions, submit the required education records, wait for the eligibility decision, pay only for realistic exam sections, retrieve the Notice to Schedule (NTS), and schedule through Prometric.
Seven-step workflow
From jurisdiction choice to exam appointment
- Choose the candidate jurisdiction.Compare sitting requirements and the later initial-license path. Your testing-center location does not choose your jurisdiction for you.
- Open the controlling application instructions.Determine whether the Board, NASBA CPA Examination Services, or another designee receives your application.
- Build the document packet.Match your legal name across the application and identification, order official transcripts, and follow any foreign-evaluation or student-route instructions.
- Submit the eligibility application.Pay only the fees the authority identifies for your situation. Save the confirmation and a copy of everything submitted.
- Resolve deficiencies in writing. If a course, transcript, identity record, or form is rejected, ask which exact rule or document is missing before buying more coursework.
- Register for realistic sections and retrieve the NTS.The NTS expiration printed in your account controls. Do not purchase more sections than you can prepare for and take within that authorization.
- Schedule and verify the appointment.Use the identifiers on the NTS, confirm the name and date, save the Prometric confirmation, and recheck the current identification policy.
Application packet
Collect evidence before the fee clock starts
Not every jurisdiction requests every item. Use this as a research list, then follow the official checklist.
Do not confuse the clocks
Application, NTS, and passed-credit dates do different jobs
An application deadline controls when materials must arrive. The NTS controls when an authorized section may be scheduled and taken. A passed-section credit window controls how long conditional credit remains active while you complete the remaining sections.
Write down the actual dates from your official account rather than adding a generic number of months from memory.
